The Aberffraw biscuit is a shell-shaped shortbread said to be Britain’s oldest biscuit. Legend has it that centuries ago a Welsh king was holding court in Aberffraw (pronounced A-ber-fro) on Anglesey, North Wales. His wife was walking on the beach there and, seeing a pretty scallop shell, had a cake baked in its shape. However, the true origin of the biscuit is the famous Christian pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It is thought that in about the 12th Century, pilgrims began pressing shortbread biscuits with scallop shells collected from their journey. Brought up on a farm in the foothills of Snowdonia, Dio Jones always had an eye for an opportunity from an early age. But it was after completing his National Service in Cyprus in the early 1960’s that he was truly inspired. He loved Wales; he was always saying that you had everything here – the sea, beautiful mountains an amazing woodland; why would you need to travel anywhere? Seeing an increase in the amount of visitors to the area, he believed that there was a gap in the tourism market; he saw that the most natural souvenir to take away from Wales was a food item. And together with his wife Marion, they developed the idea by initially making just lemon curd and selling it locally at the weekly market in Pwllheli. 1964 saw the birth of their son John, but the couple continued to cook the lemon curd by hand in the evenings, and setting off on the roads during the day, calling at gift shops and small independent retailers to sell their produce. A range of products started to emerge – largely helped by the donation of excess orchard fruits from friendly neighbours. Dio acquired the site of an old Second World War camp, and adapted the remaining buildings to be the premises of Welsh Lady Preserves in 1966. Today the business continues with John, his wife Carol and daughter Hannah at the helm, located on the same site, in the heart of the Welsh community of the Llyn peninsula, providing employment for 20 local people. Welsh Lady products are now available as far field as Japan, Australia and Canada, and sold in a vast array of retailers and by wholesalers throughout the UK.
